Fall Semester Assignment List
Date Assigned / Description & Task (Category) / Due Date
Greetings APEs for the upcoming 2017 - 18 school year! At our meetings last May I asked you to check this website during the summer as a way to get started preparing for the great adventure that is AP Euro. As I said at those meetings, the course is challenging, with adjustments being made to improve your preparation for the AP exam on May 18, 2018 as well as your future college / career experiences. Go to the College Board website (www.apstudent.collegeboard.org/), create a FREE account for yourself and start exploring info about AP European History and college, it will help you get a grip on what you need to know and the skills you need to develop for success.
You can do yourself a HUGE favor by starting to MEMORIZE the map of modern Europe, as completing a blank map of the current nations will be your first assessment. Know the locations of the nations and their capitals, as well as other major cities. Know the major rivers, mountain ranges and bodies of water as they have a lot to do with the rise and fall of nations across the four major time periods we will study together.
Begin to familiarize yourself with the issues that face today's Europe by reading or watching current news. There is a LOT GOING ON that has ties to the issues we will study this year. Some major US sources include the LA Times, Wall Street Journal, NY Times, and CNN, as well as others. Additional sources to check out for a different point of view might be the BBC, International Herald Tribune, Fox News and Al-Jazeera. Whatever you do - reading, watching or surfing the net - do it regularly to get in the habit of becoming informed, become a CRITICALLY THINKING LEARNER and informed citizen of the world!
Lastly, it is suggested that you watch some history based "period films" and / or read books to familiarize yourself with the eras, events and people that you may encounter during our studies. Also, if there are programs on the History Channel, A & E, PBS, BBC America, etc. based on what we are learning you should watch them. There are others obviously, but these are recommended by teachers across the USA. Reading "period" based books (of about 350-450 pages) is also very useful; go browse the library or Barnes & Noble for titles
Let's get started! The better you prepare the better you will do! Onward!
GO SEE "DUNKIRK" IN THE THEATERS WHILE IT IS THERE... IT BRINGS PERSONALIZES THE BRITISH RESCUE OF ITS SOLDIERS!!! IT WILL BE HELPFUL FOR SPRING SEMESTER!!!
